It programs a wide range of local and regional acts — roots\, blues\, folk\, Americana\, jazz\, and world — making it a genuine community gathering point rather than a ticketed commercial venue. Bring a lawn chair or blanket; food and refreshments are typically available on site. \n\n\n\nThe same gazebo/park hosts the Catfish River Music Festival (annual\, July\, organized by the Stoughton Opera House Friends Association) which has featured confirmed blues acts.

SUMMARY:Mama’s Worry\, Prairie Dog Bluesfest
DESCRIPTION:Local musicians Jeff Welter and Mel Wild\, having just returned home from living in Austin\, Texas\, formed Mama’s Worry in the summer of 1978 and their first gig was the River Queen Bar in McGregor\, Iowa (now Josie’s River Queen). Mel says he got the name from a club he played by the same name in Beaumont\, Texas. Mama’s Worry played their upper Mississippi River brand of good rockin’ rhythm and blues throughout the Midwest\, including appearing at the first three Prairie Dog Blues Fests. In 1999\, Mama’s Worry released their CD titled\, “Good Rockin’ Blues Tonight” featuring all original music by the group. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n For most of Mama’s Worry’s history the band consisted of all local musicians: Jeff Welter (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica)\, Mel Wild (lead vocals\, lead guitar)\, Bill Obmascher (bass\, vocals)\, Mike Kricke (drums)\, and Randy Lucas (sax\, vocals). Today\, Jeff and Mel continue playing as Mama’s Worry and the other fellas join in occasionally. \n\n\n\n Joining Jeff and Mel for the Prairie Dog Blues Fest this year will be Richard Palucci (saxophone\, keyboard)\, Kendall Techau (bass\, vocals)\, and Tim Wilson (drums). \n\n\n\nThis year marks the 40th anniversary for Mama’s Worry\, and you can still hear their soulful sets as they perform for special events in the area.

SUMMARY:Russ Green\, Prairie Dog Bluesfest
DESCRIPTION:Russ Green\, Prairie Dog BluesFest \n\n\n\nContemporary Blues harmonica player\, singer and producer Russ Green has traveled a journey into the blues that is truly different than those of most musicians. Russ was born in Chicago and grew up on the city’s west side. “Chicagoan Green’s well-above-average singing succeeds in its balance between his allegiance to tradition and his aim to reinvigorate the music in a discernible way”- Frank-John Hadley\, DownBeat Magazine. \n\n\n\nAlthough throughout his life he had listened to all types of music\, his desire to play wasn’t realized until his adult years. After being discharged from the U.S. Army\, Russ attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale where he studied film. It was at this time that his desire to play music began to grow. Like lots of fans of Jimi Hendrix\, Russ wanted to be able to re-create the sounds of the man whom he had admired for many years. But being a film student and having all of his money going to these films\, he couldn’t afford to buy a guitar. Undaunted by this realization\, Russ remembered the purchase of a harmonica from a neighborhood shop on Chicago’s west side a few years earlier. The ability to re-create the sounds of Hendrix was becoming realized\, not with a guitar\, but with a harmonica! \n\n\n\nBefore leaving Southern Illinois\, he was told that when he got back to Chicago he should check out Sugar Blue. Being unaware of who he was at the time\, his response was “sugar what?”. He was described as one of the best harmonica players in Chicago. So on his first Friday night back in Chicago Russ went out and found a Chicago Reader to see who was playing where in the city. And there it was\, Sugar Blue at Blues Etc.\, one of Chicago’s premiere blues clubs on the North side. While standing out in front of Blues Etc.\, the band started playing a song that Russ could recognize but it’s name escaped him at the moment. As he entered the club he heard the harmonica start to play. It sounded as though whomever was playing it was torturing this instrument it and pushing it to it’s very limits. But as he made his way in to the club he could see the band on stage playing\, but there was no harmonica player and as is imaginable\, it was a bit confusing. Continuing to make his way further in the club\, he caught sight of the dance floor. There he could see two women dancing with a man who had his hands cupped around his mouth\, playing the harmonica. This was Sugar Blue! Mind blown by what he was hearing and seeing\, Russ sat down at a high-top table not from from the bandstand. As he sat he saw a card on the table that said “tonight at Blues Etc. Sugar Blue the Charlie Parker of the harmonica and the Jimi Hendrix of the blues harp”. That’s it! That is what he wanted to be and it’s right in front of him. And that song the band was playing when he first arrived\, it was Miss You by The Rolling Stones\, a song that Sugar Blue played on during his time with the band. He spent the next three months in Chicago going out to see Sugar Blue wherever he was playing but was too intimidated to speak to him. Russ then moved to Seattle\, a city that captured his heart while he was in the Army. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile in Seattle he spent every waking moment concentrating on playing the harmonica. There was always a harmonica shoved in his mouth\, whether he was sitting on his couch or walking down the street. He spent seven nights a week in Blues clubs jamming or sitting in. On a Christmas visit back home to Chicago\, friends invited him to go to Rosa’s Blues Lounge where Sugar Blue was playing. This provided Russ the opportunity to meet the man whose music had captured his attention\, the man who was already being called the “Jimi Hendrix of the harmonica”. After this meeting\, Russ began thinking about returning to Chicago to take advantage of this newly formed friendship. It took a year and half\, but he returned to Chicago to continue his journey into the world of Blues. \n\n\n\nHis return to Chicago was not only an opportunity to learn from Sugar Blue\, but brought about the realization of a life long dream for Russ\, working in film production.  He started in television commercials and moved into television shows and feature films. Starting as a Production Assistant\, he worked his way to Assistant Director and became a member of the Director’s Guild of America. Television shows include E.R. and Prison Break. The feature films include Soul Food\, The Break-Up\, Hardball\, Save the Last Dance\, Road to Perdition\, Tears of the Sun and many more. With actors Paul Newman\, Tom Hanks\, Daniel Craig\, Vince Vaughn\, Vanessa Williams\, Jude Law\, Bruce Willis and many others. Russ even joined fellow harmonica player Bruce Willis on stage with his band while working on Tears of the Sun in Hawaii.  \n\n\n\nMusically Russ’ career has continued to grow since returning to Chicago. Not only has he  been tremendously influenced by Sugar Blue\, but also from Chicago’s other living legendary harmonica player\, Billy Branch. He playfully describes his relationship with his two mentors as like two little devils standing on each shoulder whispering in his ear of how he should play. He has also played\, recorded and toured with John Primer and Lurrie Bell. His producing credits include a CD for Big Llou Johnson of B.B King’s Bluesville on Sirius/XM satellite radio. That CD won a Blues Music Award for Best New Artist. He is also one of the harmonica players featured on a CD that has received rave reviews and has been played on radio stations around the world\, the Chicago Blues Harmonica Project. This recording has been credited with proving that the harmonica is still alive and vibrant in Chicago. His CD titled “City Soul” was chosen as one of DownBeat Magazines top releases of 2018. It was also one of Living Blues Magazines top 60 of the Decade. Russ has played in a number of Blues festivals including the Chicago Blues Festival\, JImiway Blues Festival in Poland\, Cognac Blues Passions in France\, Notodden Blues Festival in Norway\, Blues Cozorla Festival in Spain\, Bilbao Blues Festival in Spain\, the Burnley Mechanics Blues festival in England\, the Gloucester Blues Festival\, and the San Francisco Blues Festival\, and many more.

SUMMARY:Albert Cummings Prairie Dog Bluesfest
DESCRIPTION:Cummings began playing the five-string banjo at the age of twelve\,[3] and developed a love for bluegrass music.[4] In his late twenties\, Cummings formed a trio called “Swamp Yankee.” In 1999\, the band released an independently produced album\, The Long Way. \n\n\n\n\n\nAfter the album’s release\, the band went on the Northeast blues circuit. In 1999\, Cummings competed in the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge\, in Memphis. The following year\, he released his debut recording The Long Way. He later worked with Double Trouble and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s rhythm section. Bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton voluntarily played on and produced Cummings’ solo debut recording\, self-released\, From the Heart in 2003. Recorded in Austin\, Texas\, it featured Cummings fronting Double Trouble (including Reese Wynans) in their first recording project since Stevie Ray’s passing. In 2004\, Cummings signed a multi-album deal with Blind Pig Records. Shannon remained as the bassist for Cummings’ next album\, True To Yourself\, released in 2004. \n\n\n\nIn 2006\, Cummings recorded a fourth album\, Working Man\, with new band members. In 2008\, Cummings released a live album\, Feels So Good\, recorded at the Colonial Theater in Pittsfield\, Massachusetts. In 2011\, Cummings released an instructional DVD for the Hal Leonard Corporation entitled\, Working Man Blues Guitar. His 2012 album No Regrets debuted at No. 1 in the U.S.\, Canada and Franc] on the iTunes Blues Charts and at No. 5 on the Billboard blues chart.[8] In July 2015\, Cummings released Someone Like You\, a 12-track Blind Pig album produced by David Z. \n\n\n\nIn February 2020\, Cummings released his 11-track Provogue Records debut\, titled Believe\, produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Jim Gaines. Recording at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, influenced the creation of the project. One of the tracks on the album is a cover of the song “Hold On”\, originally by Sam & Dave. \n\n\n\nOn April 8\, 2022\, Cummings released Ten\, a 13-track Ivy Music Company album produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Chuck Ainlay.[9] A Blues Rock Review article described the compilation as “the blues rocker’s gone country” suggesting that in this album Cummings reveals “discovered depth and complexity within a new style”.[10]
