Style
Tony Kannen has a style rooted in the American Music tradition. Whether a blues shout, rock-n-roll howl or soulful ballad, he delivers in a powerful authoritative voice and melodious tone.
Today, he continues to captivate audiences with his dynamic performances. With every note he sings, he honors that rich heritage while bringing something fresh to the stage.
Tony’s close association with this music goes back a lifetime. Growing up in a family of singers helped to nurture a love for telling stories through song. In the 1960’s under the tutelage of older brother rock-n-roll singer/guitarist Ray Kannen he learned harmony and control, and how to use his instrument with emotion, humor and swagger in equal proportions.
Beginnings
Born into a family of singers, Kannen absorbed music early and naturally. Household harmonies taught him phrasing, storytelling, and emotional honesty long before he stepped onto a stage. His most formative early mentor was his older brother, Ray Kannen, a rock‑and‑roll singer and guitarist who introduced Tony to the discipline of harmony, vocal control, and the art of performing with equal parts swagger, humor, and heart. Those lessons became the foundation of a lifelong musical identity.
By the 1970s, Kannen had entered the high‑energy world of regional club bands, where nightly performances forged his stamina and sharpened his technique. He spent the late ’70s and ’80s fronting The Shakedown Blues Band, a group known for its driving sets and ability to command both small roadhouse bars and large festival crowds. In the 1990s he shifted into The Roadhouse Rockers, continuing to refine his blend of blues and rock while expanding his reach across Wisconsin’s live‑music circuit.
Along the way…
In 2000, Kannen launched Swingin’ the Blues, a jump‑blues project that showcased his versatility and deep affection for classic American dance music. The band’s upbeat arrangements and horn‑inflected grooves highlighted his ability to move fluidly between genres while keeping the blues at the center of his craft.
Today, Tony Kannen remains a vital contributor to Madison’s music scene as the leader of The Sound Garden Crew, a blues‑and‑soul ensemble dedicated to bringing rhythm‑and‑blues energy to new audiences. With a seasoned group of musicians behind him, Kannen continues to “grind out dance grooves,” honoring the tradition he grew up with while pushing it forward for a new generation of fans.
The years working with high energy club bands helped to hone his technique, The Shakedown Blues Band in the ‘70s and ‘80s, The Roadhouse Rockers in the ‘90s, performing in small roadhouse bars and in front of festival audiences in the thousands. In 2000 Tony expanded this theme forming the jump blues band Swingin’ the Blues. There are debts owed along the way to all the talented musicians and loyal fans. The caliber of the music speaks for itself.
Across six decades of performance, Tony Kannen has built a career rooted in authenticity, musical respect, and the joy of connecting with listeners. His voice—rich, powerful, unmistakably his—remains one of the region’s most reliable conduits of American music.
