Few living musicians embody the electric Chicago blues tradition as completely as John Primer. Born on March 5, 1945, in Camden, Mississippi, Primer grew up surrounded by the field hollers, gospel harmonies, and work songs that shaped the earliest blues. When he moved to Chicago at age 18, he stepped directly into the heart of the city’s legendary scene — and never looked back.
🔵 From Maxwell Street to the Masters
Primer’s rise began on Maxwell Street, where he played for tips and caught the attention of Chicago’s blues royalty. His breakthrough came at Theresa’s Lounge, earning a seven‑year residency under Junior Wells — a nightly education in stagecraft, band leadership, and deep-pocket rhythm guitar. His talent soon carried him into the Willie Dixon All‑Star Band, and then into the inner circle of the greatest of them all: Muddy Waters. As Muddy’s rhythm guitarist in the early 1980s, Primer absorbed the tradition at its source, helping carry the band’s sound into its final era.
🎤 The Real Deal Legacy
After Muddy’s passing, Primer spent more than a decade with Magic Slim & The Teardrops, touring internationally and sharpening the raw, muscular Chicago sound that would define his solo career.
In 1995, he released his debut album, The Real Deal, establishing himself as a bandleader with a voice as commanding as his guitar. Since then, he has appeared on more than 100 recordings, founded Blues House Productions, and earned multiple Grammy nominations, Blues Music Awards, and induction into the Blues Hall of Fame (2023).

Primer’s band is a living extension of his lineage — tight, soulful, and steeped in the traditions he learned firsthand from Wells, Dixon, Waters, and Slim. Their shows deliver the unmistakable Chicago groove: driving rhythm, stinging leads, and vocals that testify to a lifetime in the blues.
